The PlayStation Network

By Mark Jones of Gadgets-4-Free.co.uk

The PlayStation Network or PSN for short was created by Sony as an online portal for the PlayStation 3 games console. It was released to the general public in November 2006 to coincide with the North American and Japanese launch of the PS3. The PSN has launched in other territories in line with the release of the PS3 console. Users can sign up for the service using the PS3, a PSP or through the PSN's website. The PSN provides various services to Sony's customers. The first and probably most important is online gaming, allowing users of PlayStation hardware across the globe to play each other. This service is free to registered users, unlike Microsoft's Xbox Live which requires a paid subscription. The service also provides a web browser with Google search functionality and a store where users can download games to play on their PS3 or PSP. Some of these downloads are free whilst others need to be paid for. They often include classic titles from the days of the PS One. The PSN also includes downloads of videos including TV shows and trailers for upcoming games and movies. Other uses of the PSN includes trophies where the best players on various games can show off their achievements, score charts and leaderboards, friends lists who users regularly interact with in conjunction with an instant messaging service and voice, video or text chat which can often be used in game. The PSN brings a whole new dimension to users of either the PS3 or PSP, making the devices much more than a simple gaming device.
