The new Nintendo DSi
By Mark Jones
The new Nintendo DSi has just been released as the successor to the popular DS Lite handheld gaming device. The new model brings with it a raft of technical improvements over its predecessor. The most apparent change is the new models thinner profile. It is 12 percent (or 2.6mm) slimmer than the DS Lite, although this new slimness come at a price. The new model sees the GameBoy Advance cartridge slot removed, eliminating backward compatibility with GBA games. The next improvement concerns the larger double 3.25 inch LCD screens as opposed to the 3 inch screens found on the DS Lite. Despite the new screens providing a 17 percent larger display area the new DSi sees a reduction in battery life from the DS Lite's 19 hours down to 14 hours. The next improvement surrounds the sound. The DSi has improved speakers over the DS Lite along with an MP3 music player as standard. A further improvement is the inclusion of an integrated SD card slot. Although the DSi looses the GameBoy Advance cartridge slot an SD slot is a much more useful replacement allowing user to transfer photos and music to and from the device. The DSi now features 0.3 mega pixel resolution cameras for the first time on a Nintendo gaming device. Two cameras are present, one looking back at the user on the hinge between the screens and one on the outside of the casing. The DSi also sees a series of technical improvements aimed at making the device more powerful than its predecessor. The main ARM9 processor now runs at twice the previous speed at 133MHz whilst the amount of RAM (Random Access Memory) has been quadrupled to 16MB of RAM. We hope that this intelligence has adequately highlighted the improvements brought about by the new Nintendo DSi over the previous generation DS Lite.
