Sony PlayStation 3: Is there a new one on the way?
By Mac Jones of byte-guides.com
The persistent Sony PlayStation 3 price cut rumours have, in the past few days, been replaced with talk of a redesigned slimmer PS3. Whether this is true we do not know but expect the rumours to become truth (or not) at the E3 electronics show in June. This is where all of the main electronic and especially console related news becomes fact. What have Sony to gain in revising the PS3 less than three years after its release? We take a look. The first and primary reason would be that of cost. Sony have not made any money on the PS3 and are under pressure to do so. A revised console could be designed as a cheaper console with a smaller casing, more integrated circuits and perhaps a reduction in features (e.g. fewer USB ports). A secondary reason for a redesign could be to re-ignite demand for the console. When a new games machine is launched the surrounding hype pushes sales which naturally slow down once the item has been out for a while. A new design could boost sales without the need for a loss-leading price cut. A new PS3 is only speculation at this moment in time so we'll have to wait until the E3 show in June to find out. |
