An introduction to Blu-ray

By Mark Jones

Here we have a quick introduction to the Blu-ray optical disk. The Blu-ray format was developed by Sony as a successor to the popular DVD based disk format. Blu-ray is developed primarily for movie use but as with DVD is also intended for data use, including back ups, general storage and games. The first Blu-ray disk (called DVR Blue at the time) was unveiled in October 2000, with the commercial introduction of the format taking place in June 2006. The main advantage of Blu-ray is capacity. A double sided disk can hold up to 50GB of data, compared with just 9.4GB on a DVD. This allows Blu-ray to provide its main function, that of a carrier for high definition movies. A Blu-ray movie disk allows a 1920 x 1080 resolution movie along with several high resolution audio tracks to fit on one standard 13cm diameter disk. Blu-ray has had a relatively slow start in the marketplace, although the inclusion of a Blu-ray player in every PS3 games console has helped. As prices of hardware continues to drop and the number of movies available steadily increases we will surely begin to see a rise in the popularity of the format.
